Steven Lee Taylor was an upstanding citizen who left an incredible legacy of patriotism and integrity behind after passing peacefully at home in Gold Hill on January 20, 2024 at age 77. Born November 5, 1946 to Boyd Taylor and Ophelia Morgan of Newark, NJ; Steven’s life exemplified his strong values of family, community and country dedication; however despite succumbing to cancer his legacy continues to inspire all who knew or touched his spirit.

A Proud Veteran’s Journey

Steven embarked upon his path as a proud veteran after graduating East Rowan High School when he joined the US Navy during Vietnam. This period not only cemented his patriotism and discipline, but it also fostered pride in both family military history as well as commitment to nation. Steven credits this experience for shaping him both personally and teaching valuable lessons about commitment to both country and family alike.

Legacy of Love and Family

Steven was equally remarkable outside the military. Married for 51 years to Nancy Whitley Taylor, their union stood as an outstanding example of love and partnership. Together they raised four children-Gail, Tom, Angie Stephanie and Steve Jr.-and loved all their grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. Steven shared strong bonds with Sherry Roger and Robert as siblings which provided strength to all his extended family; his legacy lives on through memories cherished and values imparted on those left behind.

A Community’s Farewell

Steven Lee Taylor was honored at a farewell service led by Pastor Steve Holshouser at Calvary Baptist Tabernacle in Salisbury, NC, on January 31. Following this service, military honors at Salisbury National Cemetery paid their respects and tributed his distinguished service during World War II and retirement as an Army sergeant major with honorable retirement rites from Salisbury National Cemetery. Support from Powles Staton Funeral Home which offers Veterans Funeral Care services underscored how greatly loved Steven is within his local community.

Celebrating A Life Well Lived

Steven Lee Taylor led an amazing life filled with hard work, devotion and service – from Vietnam battlefields to Gold Hill streets he never wavered from upholding his values he cherished. Though gone now his memory lives on through deep love for family, nation service pride, lasting community impact. We remember Steven so that we may all make each moment count by living according to what truly matters and cherishing every precious memory with loved ones.
