Dear Jools,
I totally understand. My mother has become quite incontinent over the past 2 years especially and there have been quite a few incidents and still now like last week when she urinated onto the floor.
We try to take her to the bathroom every hour although this is still not totally fool proof but at least it saves on moping up time.
Also we buy waterproof bed padding sheet especially for people with incontinence/pets that are not house trained etc as her incontinence is especially bad at night. I put a matress protector on top of the mattress. Next comes this sheet. Then comes the bedsheet and on top of the bedsheet another bed padding sheet.
If you forego the bed padding sheet on top of your bedsheet at least you still have the protection underneath the sheet so even if the bedsheet gets soaked the matress is protected from urine stains etc. Cleaning a bedsheet is far easier than dealing with a soaked mattress.
I also put her in a diaper especially in the later hours of the day as I find that incontinence affects the person later in the day/especially at night rather than in the morning.
Best wishes and regards,
From a fellow carer
=jools090867;719190]For those kind people who recommended a red toilet seat for my father who was emptying a whole bladder full of urine on the floor every time he went to the toilet - I am sad to say it didnt work
The toilet seat has been in place for several weeks now, but he still cant aim at the toilet and it all ends up on the floor or down his legs, or both on most occasions.
He now forgets to flush, forgets to lift "the ring" and sometimes misses with the toilet roll after he has been for number two's..
We took him for an MRI scan last week but he got scared of the noise and refused to have it done, getting very agitated with the staff who backed down immediately..
On a positive note, we now have a wonderful psychiatric nurse who calls in and rings regularly, she has changed his meds and he is now on Risperidone and will be starting Memantine in conjunction with this next week. He is also on sleeping tablets, which are a bit hit and miss at the moment
She is also trying to push SS to arrange for the assessments to be done, as she feels that mum needs a rest asap...
He is still hallucinating but not so much now, his hands are still separate people and he insists there is a big black dog in the house which scares him, but its better than it was!![/QUOTE]
